Overlooking its gulf, Trieste is the most Central European of Italian cities: Piazza Unità d’Italia opens straight onto the sea, its historic cafés recall a city of writers, and the Canal Grande is a reminder of its past as the port of the Habsburg Empire.

A few kilometres from the centre, the white Miramare Castle, home of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, is reflected in the Adriatic and surrounded by a large park. Trieste is reached by direct train on the Venice–Trieste line or by car along the A4 motorway.
